How To Find Your Perfect Neighborhood!

A Neighborhood with the words Your Perfect Neighborhood? Your Perfect Neighborhood?

Finding the Right Neighborhood

When you think about your dream home, are you seeing the house, or the neighborhood it’s in?

It’s easy to get caught up in bedroom and bathroom counts when you’re shopping for a new home, but the biggest choice you’re going to make in the process is of course the ‘where’ question. So how do you find the home that’s going to be the perfect fit for your whole lifestyle?

Here are three of my favorite tips to see if an area or a particular area is right for you:

  • Check out the basic stats.
What is the median sale price of homes in a given neighborhood? How do the local and nearby schools perform? What amenities are nearby? How popular is the neighborhood in today’s market?
  • See what the neighbors are doing.
Get a sense of local activities, and see if it looks like a place with frequent block-parties or if people may keep more to themselves.
  • Learn the traffic patterns.
Knowing that you’re close to the highway or a public transportation center is one thing. You should find out if there are frequent jams at key commuting times, or if a nearby farmers’ market limits road access during weekends. You may also want to consider how much parking is available, both for yourself and for when you want to entertain.

Give us call anytime you’d like to discuss which neighborhoods you’re considering. We’d love to talk about local real estate issues and market conditions you should consider as you’re building your home buying plan.

The Red Mill Neighborhood

Front of Nimmo Church
Nimmo Church

Red Mill is a very sought-after area in Virginia Beach! It has a very Virginia Beach feel to it. On the East end is the Lagomar neighborhood and the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. North is Dam Neck Estates, Pine Meadows and Dam Neck Road. On the West is the Strawbridge neighborhood, Mathews Green and Strawbridge Marketplace. South is Heritage Park and Hell’s Point Golf Club. Access to Interstate 264 is way up North via General Booth Blvd to Oceana Blvd or straight up London Bridge Rd. The Virginia Beach Oceanfront is minutes away, up General Booth Blvd! The Pungo neighborhood is close, and Sandbridge is a tourist beach not far away. You’re in luck if you like parks! All of Virginia Beach is park heavy! Including the area around Red Mill. Red Mill Farms Park is a huge park with 2 baseball diamonds on Sandbridge Rd. Nimmo Church is a beautiful old church that serves as a landmark for the locals. The Nimmo Meeting House for the church was built in 1791 which later became the sanctuary. The Strawbridge Neighborhood Park and the Ocean Lakes East Neighborhood Park both have great playgrounds for children to play! Ocean Lakes North Park is essentially a field. Culver Park has a nice playground and tennis courts!

There is a ton of shopping, dining and entertainment in the area! Get your groceries at Food Lion, Walmart, Target, Farm Fresh or Harris Teeter. There is a nice mix of common and uncommon dining options. Check out Chipotle’s, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Firehouse Subs, Chili’s, Schlotzsky’s, Outback Steakhouse, McDonald’s and Panera Bread. But you could also look into these more unique restaurants: Primo Pizzaria, Lago Mar Pizza, Hip Hops Grill, Chowboy Republic, Rigoletto Italian Bakery and Cafe, Masola Bites, Boardwok and Volcano Sushi Bar! Don’t forget all the Starbucks on every block. other businesses include CVS, OfficeMax, HomeGoods, Michaels, T.J. Maxx, Home Depot, Coastal Edge, Dollar Tree and Regal Cinemas Strawbridge. Nightlife includes many of the restaurants and also includes A.J. Gators, Kelly’s Tavern, FIREBREW Bar & Grill, and Whiskey Kitchen!

You get the idea! There is a large amount of every kind of store here. This doesn’t detract from how calm and pleasant the neighborhoods are here.

Relocating? Pay Attention To The Kids

Moving to a new city or state is filled with many different exciting possibilities – new home, new job, new restaurants to try. But for kids, relocating is fraught with fear – new school, new faces, new neighborhood.

Wide Eyed Child with stars

If there’s a relocation in your future, here are a few ways to help your kids adjust and embrace their new home:

Do your research. If you can’t visit your new community together in advance, do some research and find out what attractions may be particularly interesting to your child. Get your child excited about all the new places to explore.

Get to know families with same-age children. Invite them over or arrange for a play date at the park. This will help your child bridge the often difficult gap of making new friends.

Get them involved. The sooner your child gets involved in the local activity of their choosing the better.

Moving? Make Sure The Kids Are Alright

Enlist a support group. New teachers, coaches, guidance counselors and clergy can all play a critical role in helping your child adjust, so get them on board right away.

Acknowledge their feelings. Most important of all, allow your child to mourn the loss of their former home, community and friends. Let him or her know these feelings are normal and that you, too, miss your old home sometimes.
